Windsurf

Windsurf, built by the team behind Codeium, is an AI code editor with an agent called Cascade that can edit across files, run commands and understand large codebases. It was aimed at developers, startups and technical teams who want to build software faster. In July 2025 Google hired the Windsurf CEO and some staff in a licensing deal, and days later Cognition, maker of Devin, agreed to acquire the Windsurf product, brand, IP and remaining team. Windsurf continues to operate while Cognition integrates it with Devin. Existing users can keep using it but should watch for plan changes. If you need something similar today, popular options include Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code. Lesson for users: always keep your own copies of important data when you rely on any AI service, because products can change owners or close with little notice.
